Akro-Mils shifts plastics manufacturing to Wadsworth, Ohio

Zoom  Zoom Issue Date:2016-04-20   Browse:1304
Akro-Mils is completing consolidation of plastics products manufacturing and warehousing in Wadsworth, Ohio.

The firm has been renovating a new 125,000-square-foot facility, across Seville Street from its main Wadsworth location. Renovations and relocating injection molding and warehousing from Sandusky, Ohio, to Wadsworth began in the autumn and were completed early this month.

Akro-Mils spokesman Ken Torisky said in a phone interview that the Sandusky facility, owned by Akro-Mils, will continue as an operation focusing on metal and wood products. Plastics production and warehousing in Sandusky occupied 160,000 square feet.

“We primarily now make storage bins, totes and containers in Wadsworth,” Torisky explained. The Wadsworth site now contains 26 injection molding presses with clamping forces up to 1,600 tons. Employment at Wadsworth has grown to its current level of 134 and hiring continues for the converted facility, which eventually will employ up to 35.

“This will allow the company to produce all plastic products in our Wadsworth facility without having to transfer stock to our Sandusky plant for warehousing and shipping,” noted Akro-Mils plant manager Jim Daw in a news release. Future plans for the converted building include a shipping office.

Akro-Mils supplies the industrial, medical/pharmaceutical, commercial and consumer markets. It is a subsidiary of Myers Industries Inc., both businesses being headquartered in Akron, Ohio.
