The committee of the Shengli Community in Karamay spent nearly 5,000 yuan ($805) buying 76 fire blankets and gave them to elderly people living alone in the community on Nov 25.
In the winter months, heating, lighting, and cooking activities increase significantly – and with them, the risk of residential fires. Once such accident occurs, aged people who live alone become a high risk group. In the past, the Shengli Community held lectures to teach the elderly about fire protection and firefighting. This year, the community purchased some fire blankets, sent them to people's homes and taught them how to use the blankets.
"I don't know how to use a fire extinguisher. A fire blanket is easy to use and it's really practical for the elderly." When the community gave her a fire blanket, Yang Yuzhi was really happy. "The weather is getting cold, but the community's care and love make us feel very warm."
A fire blanket is a piece of white cloth which is 1 meter long and 1 meter wide. It's woven from flame retardant materials and plays a role in isolating heat and flames. If something at home catches fire, people just need to use the fire blanket to cover the ignition point. On the other hand, if the fire gets out of control, people can wear the blanket and escape.
