Korean tile maker launches production in Ohio

NOX Corp. of South Korea, a major global producer of vinyl tiles, has recently started a new factory in Fostoria, Ohio, that is equipped with several calenders and complete assembly line — including a PWE 250 planetary roller extruder from Battenfeld-Cincinnati Group in Vienna.

The planetary roller extruder has an output of between 1,600 and 2,200 kilograms an hour (3,527 to 4,850 pounds) of transparent or opaque PVC sheet. The transparent sheet is used as a top-layer against scratch marks, while the opaque, mainly white sheet is printed with the tile’s decoration. Afterward, all the layers get laminated and embossed together onto a base material highly filled with chalk.

According to Battenfeld-Cincinnati, NOX was the first company to market “LVT click” and “loose-lay LVT” in 2006. LVTs are PCV decking laminated from multiple sheet and installed like vinyl flooring.

The sheet used is made on calenders.

The planetary roller extruder system features good mixing properties, short residence times and a high level of surface renewal.

“LVTs are very sophisticated and technically complex products,” said NOX President and CEO Dan Koh. “We have been working successfully with Battenfeld-Cincinnati for many years and appreciate the high quality of the machines. For our new factory in the USA, it was especially important to have local service support from the U.S. facility of Battenfeld-Cincinnati.”

Battenfeld-Cincinnati’s U.S. operation is in McPherson, Kan.
