A Huntsman polyurea coating has been applied to protect and rainproof infrastructure equal to the size of almost 100 soccer pitches at the FIFA 2014 World Cup stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Maracana Stadium will host crowds of up to 100,000 people when top national teams convene there for the World Cup clash this summer.
Polyurea applications completed by Radial Química as part of the project included a 12,000m2 coating of pure polyurea at FIFA HQ in Rio de Janeiro. The HQ was also treated to an additional 12,000m2 of thermal insulation while a further 15,000m2 of pure polyurea was applied at two nearby shopping centres.
Radial Química developed specialised solutions to address the variety of substrates to be coated at the FIFA site. The company used six sets of Gama hydraulic equipment to spray the substrates with primers and fast-drying glues.
As well as polyurea coating pedestrian walkway areas and viewing stands, Radial was one of three companies to construct a polyurethane self-leveling floor with flake finish and sealed with polyaspartic varnish.
Work began mid-January 2013 and was complete 102 days later in April said Radial.
The company worked through extreme heat and rain, Radial Química prepared the substrates and coated the stands and viewing areas with pure polyurea.
