The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) recently announced modest gains, amongst its members, for 2013, with increased unit sales of 1.5 % and an increase of 2.1 % in USD terms.
Unfortunately, for the full foam sector the innerspring segment achieved a rare accomplishment and dramatically outperformed the speciality sleep segment, which had previously dominated growth figures due to the popularity of memory foam mattresses.
Preliminary figures show innerspring mattress units up 2.7 % for the year versus a 7.3 % decline for speciality mattress units. The value of innerspring mattress deliveries was up a healthy 8.1 %, compared with a 4.3 % decline for speciality mattresses.
Final figures for 2013 will not be available until ISPA completes a more detailed look at the year and issues its annual report in a few months. ISPA's monthly Bedding Barometer reported that the industry recorded a strong December 2013, with units up 4.8 % that month and the USD value of bedding shipments increasing 7.0 %.
