The concept of 'sustainable architecture' is one that is being widely debated internationally, with several definitions and contributing elements shaping its horizon and affecting its current practice. During Cityscape Global 2011, the World Architecture Congress will play host to some of the most respected experts from the industry for two days of discussion, networking and debate.

People spend around 90% of their time inside buildings, therefore is it not imperative that the design, layout and life cycle of that building are addressed through sustainable architecture practices.

Andy von Bradsky, chairman of PRP Architects and the opening keynote speaker at WAC, said, "Creating developments that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable remains a top priority for the international community. In the wake of the global financial crisis there may be a temptation to water down sustainability targets for cost reasons and concentrate on economic growth at the expense of sustainable outcomes. At the same time, developing economies are growing at a fast pace and need to ensure they meet appropriate standards for sustainability and are in an ideal position to embrace best practice."

The World Architecture Congress, taking place alongside Cityscape Global at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, will address several of the challenges that architects face when looking at sustainability. Topics include a look at overcoming recent challenges and identifying future solutions to applying sustainable architecture techniques, with Emirates Green Building Council UAE, Masdar, ATKINS Middle East, Buro Happold and Quantum-AIP all taking part in a panel discussion to explore cost-effective methods, examine recent achievements and generate pro-active solutions to current challenges.

There will also be interactive round table discussions taking place on the second day of the conference, providing a platform for experts to debate the situation of sustainable architecture in Dubai and in Qatar. The conference will close with the opportunity for delegates to put their questions to one of the most respected names in the industry, Will Alsop of RMJM.

Chris Speller, Group Director for Cityscape, said, "In creating this conference, we provide a platform to discuss challenges and present solutions to sustainable architecture, with input from local and international experts."

"Cityscape has always been about working alongside the industry to drive forward innovation and evolution - this conference programme is indicative of this ethos and we look forward to an interesting series of discussions," added Speller.
