1.1 This document provides recommendations (not requirements) for fire prevention and fire protection for electric generating plants and high voltage direct current converter stations, except as follows nuclear power plants are addressed in NFPA 805, Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Light Water Nuclear Power Plants; and hydroelectric plants are addressed in NFPA 851, Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Hydroelectric Generating Plants.

The expanded 2010 edition of NFPA 850 covers the latest developments in electric generating plant safety.
NFPA 850 Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants and High Voltage Direct Current Converter Stations outlines fire safety recommendations for gas, oil, coal, and alternative fuel electric generating plants including high voltage direct current converter stations and combustion turbine units used for electric generation. Provisions apply to both new and existing plants.
This document provides fire prevention and fire protection recommendations for the safety of construction and operating personnel, physical integrity of plant components, and the continuity of plant operations.
The revised 2010 edition includes a comprehensive new chapter on the fire protection design process, plus other new chapters with detailed information concerning
·    Wind turbine generating facilities
·    Solar thermal power generation
·    Geothermal power plants
·    Integrated gasification combined cycle generating facilities
The 2010 NFPA 850 also recognizes the use of compressed air foam systems and fast depressurization systems and provide recommendations on the use of these systems. (Softbound, 73 pp., 2010)
